Soria is a beautiful
city offering a stunning perspective from the Castle hill,
at the foot of which a hamlet appears on the right
bank of river Duero.
Object of many literary references, framework
for legends written by Becquer,
sung to by poets Antonio Machado and
Gerardo Diego, this town often
referred to as "the great unknown" boasts incomparable
patrimonial wealth.
Churches, some
erected in the best Romanesque style; convents,
palaces and
large houses in noble streets, an extensive park
-la dehesa (the meadow)-, pleasant squares, rest areas
and great establishments offering the best food and drink.
The city’s surroundings
are also well worth a visit, with incomparable natural locations
such as the banks of river Duero and mount Valonsadero.
7 Km. from Soria towards Logroño we come
upon Garray, a village that
spreads out along the side of the hill accommodating the site
of the mythical city of Numancia.
Numancia is thought to have been founded in the late 3rd century
b.C.
The contemporary ruins are only a part of the
town, which present meticulous information on its layout and
global organisation.
The most interesting chapter of life in Numancia
is unquestionably its participation
in the Celtiberian wars and the episode
regarding its conquest.
